Addressing Addiction

Addiction is a complex condition that affects individuals, families, and communities. Understanding it is essential for healing and change. This page provides resources and information for those seeking help or wanting to learn more about addiction and recovery.

Addiction’s Growing Impact in Alberta

Addiction is increasingly affecting more people. According to the Alberta Substance Use Surveillance System, the number of clients treated in the AHS Opioid Dependency Program surged from 6,201 in 2018 to 15,930 in 2023—an increase of 157%. This rise underscores addiction as a pressing public health issue, with significant economic impacts. In 2020, substance use cost Alberta over $2.7 billion, leading to increased healthcare costs, lost productivity, and justice system strain.

The Human Cost of Addiction

Addiction leads to social isolation, job loss, and housing instability, contributing to cycles of poverty and family breakdown. Research shows that parental substance use can result in higher instances of childhood neglect and behavioral issues, posing a risk for future addiction. The Palix Foundation’s Alberta Wellness Initiative highlights the correlation between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and long-term addiction vulnerability. Trauma and family instability significantly increase this risk.

Building Resilience to Aid Recovery

Breaking the cycle of addiction involves building resilience, which helps individuals cope with stress and challenges. We focus on:

  • Therapeutic programs for trauma and emotional health.
  • Peer support networks fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Family engagement to strengthen support systems.
  • Community involvement to promote purpose and reconnection.

Resilient individuals benefit families and communities. Children of parents in recovery enjoy more stable environments, reducing their own addiction risk.

Recovery’s Ripple Effect

Recovery transforms lives and strengthens families and communities. It not only helps individuals overcome addiction but also restores relationships and builds healthier environments. Those in recovery contribute to society by returning to work and supporting others, making recovery a community-wide benefit. We view addiction as a health condition rooted in various factors. By addressing these issues and fostering resilience, we can create lasting change for individuals and communities. Statistics from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction This report draws on findings from “Life in Recovery from Addiction in Canada,” which enhances our understanding of addiction recovery.
